The Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) is Singapore’s lead government agency dedicated to fostering world-class scientific research and talent for a vibrant knowledge-based economy. A*STAR currently oversees more than 20 research institutes, consortia and centres located in Biopolis and Fusionopolis and their vicinity, and supports extramural research with the universities, hospital research centres, as well as other local and international partners.
Research Support Centre
The Research Support Centre (RSC) is a unit of A*STAR that manages Singapore's largest e-commerce portal for scientific services and laboratory consumables. Set up in 2003 to support the biomedical research ecosystem, RSC is an end-to-end life science solutions provider for research lab needs and the online marketplace for suppliers and buyers of life science research services and products.
Online Store
RSC's online store today partners over 90 qualified suppliers and services a customer base of more than 3,000 including A*STAR Research Institutes, Industry players and Educational Institutions with 10,000 over life science products from genomics, immunology, animal studies and bioimaging.
Digital Backbone Benefits
In 2016, RSC began to look into automating its backend processes in order to better support the growing needs of the research community. The plan was to streamline its Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) backend processes making it easier to keep track of vendors and customers.
Previously, vendors relied on RSC to manage their profile, products and promotions. Presently, the vendors create their own profiles via a self-service portal. The data is then automatically updated in the ERP system.
New customers can now create their profile in the online store, which then automatically updates the ERP system. This eliminates the need to manually create the profile in the ERP system.
In the past, products offered by RSC were recorded manually on Excel. Now the ERP allows vendors to update products and prices. This information is then synchronized automatically to the CRM, the Online Store and Third-Party Marketplaces like Alibaba and Amazon.
Integration
By providing a Digital Backbone to RSC's online store, the once fragmented backend process is now an integrated engine that pushes sales and provides better insight for the management.
